"Fukushima Dai-ichi was an unprecedented event for the ocean, in terms of the amount of radioactivity going in to the ocean from a disaster of this nature," said Ken Buesseler, a senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Even more radioactivity was washed into the ocean or deposited there from the atmosphere. In the following days, explosions rocked the facility and more than 150,000 people were forced to evacuate the surrounding area to avoid potential radioactive fallout. The Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant had also been damaged. Entire towns were destroyed by the three-story wall of water and nearly 16,000 people were killed. Tsunami waves, generated as the seafloor thrust upwards, hit the closest parts of the Japanese coastline less than half an hour later. The 9.0-magnitude quake lasted as long as six minutes and shifted the main island eight feet to the east. Japan experiences hundreds of earthquakes every year, but the Great Tohoku Earthquake was the most powerful the country had ever recorded. Tomato prices have again reached Rs 200 per kg and even more at several places across India. On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake 80 miles east of the Japanese city of Sendai generated a towering tsunami that slammed into the coastline and critically damaged the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. It’s Rs 250 per kg now: Why are tomato prices climbing up again? Shortly after the Supreme Court stayed the conviction of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Modi surname defamation case, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday welcomed the court verdict saying "Truth Alone Triumphs!" and attacked the BJP for conspiratorial hounding of Gandhi 'Truth Alone Triumphs!', says Kharge after Supreme Court stays Rahul Gandhi's conviction We will continue our legal battle, says Purnesh Modi who filed defamation case against Rahul Gandhiįormer Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi had filed a criminal defamation case in 2019 against Rahul Gandhi over his 'How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?' remark made during an election rally in Kolar in Karnataka on 13 April, 2019 The Fukushima disaster, the worst nuclear accident in the world in a quarter century, prompted the gradual shutdown of all Japan's nuclear reactors until there were none left operating in May 2012, leaving the country without atomic power for the first time since 1970. That means they will be idled by the middle of September, according to Kansai Electric spokesman Takahiro Senoh. ![]() The only two of Japan's 50 nuclear plants operating are both at Kansai Electric Power's Ohi plant in western Japan, and must be for shut for maintenance 13 months after resuming commercial operations, according to Japanese law. ![]() Tanaka earlier warned the government its three-year deadline to carry out safety checks of reactors is too ambitious. ![]() "In terms of earthquakes and tsunamis, I'm sure our safety standards will be the toughest in the world," NRA chief Shunichi Tanaka said at a regular news conference on Wednesday. The NRA say it will finalise the safety standards by July. The NRA, set up in September last year with more independence than its predecessor, this week released a draft of tough new rules that nuclear operators must comply with to get reactors approved for restart. Thermal coal imports were up 6.5 percent to 107.7 million tonnes. That is more than one third of global trade of about 240 million tonnes in LNG in 2011.Ĭrude oil imports rose 2 percent in 2012 to 3.66 million barrels a day, from a 22-year low in 2011. Japan is already the world's top liquefied natural gas (LNG) importer, and volumes rose 11.2 percent to a record 87.31 million tonnes in 2012 from a year earlier, according to government data. Utilities and the government, however, are keen to reduce expensive oil and gas imports.
